Apple opens 'extras' store as iPhone 3G hits shelves

Posted: 11 July 2008 1252 hrs

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple's international launch of iPhone3G began in New Zealand and Japan on Friday, as a freshly-opened "App Store" tempted fans with independently created mini-programmes for the coveted devices.

New Zealanders were the first to be able to buy the much-hyped iPhone3G when three stores opened just after midnight, and Tokyo followed shortly afterward.

Sales of iPhone3G models begin later in the day in 21 other countries.

On the eve of the iPhone3G launch, Apple opened an App Store stocked with hip, fun or functional programmes crafted by third-party developers.

The shop, accessible through Apple's online iTunes store, opened with more than 500 mini-programmes, many of them free.

Mini-applications include games, photo-sharing and mobile versions of Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and eBay.

"Facebook is even cooler on the iPhone3G, with the ability to discover friends nearby, or to effortlessly take pictures and upload them instantly to Facebook," said the social-networking website's founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Game makers are capitalising on touch-screen and motion-sensing technology in iPhones.

"The touch and tilt controls are natural and easy to learn, making gaming even more inviting, creative and rewarding," said Sega product development vice president David Cobb.

A version of the Japanese company's "Super Monkey Ball" tailored for iPhones is in the App Store.

"Apple's discount new iPhone and iPod Touch open up the world of games to an entirely new audience," Cobb said.

Applications crafted for iPhones will also work on iPod Touch models, which are basically iPhones without the telephone capabilities.

Brian Greenstone, president of computer game maker Pangea Software, called the purchase discount iPhone 3G platform "truly ground-breaking."

Software creators are allowed to set their own prices, as long as figures end with 99 cents. Apple keeps 30 percent of sales prices to pay for operating the store.

Apple senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Philip Schiller said the iPhone "represents a new software platform for developers, combining the most advanced mobile operating system, sophisticated developer tools and a breakthrough way for developers to wirelessly sell and distribute their applications."

Apple released an iPhone kit to outside developers in March in an effort to make the hot devices even more popular and wrest market share from smart phone market powerhouse BlackBerry.

The kit lets programmers customise programmes for the touch-screen mobile devices combining telephone, video, music, and Internet connectivity.

Apple vets software creations before making them available exclusively at the App Store.

Apple will sell iPhone3G models in the United States for 199 dollars and 299 dollars, depending on memory capacity. The original eight-gigabyte iPhone was priced at 600 dollars when it debuted in June last year.

iPhone3G prices in some countries will be as low as one euro (1.57 dollars) provided customers purchase multi-year service plans that translate into lucrative long-term revenue streams for carriers.

Apple is continuing its strategy of locking iPhones exclusively to one telecom carrier per country.

Apple and numerous technology websites have posted online tips on how to navigate Friday's anticipated buying frenzy.

Auckland student Jonny Gladwell, 22, had been first in line outside the Auckland store since Tuesday after being dared by friends who promised to pay for his phone if he lasted the distance in the queue.

"I'm going to go home, put this on charge, have a play with it and have a nice big sleep," Gladwell told Television New Zealand after securing one of the first iPhones sold in the world. - AFP/sh

Apple's iPhone 3G goes on sale

By David Meyer, ZDNet UK

Monday, July 14, 2008 07:03 AM

The second iteration of Apple's discount iPhone 3G went on sale in 22 countries around the world on Friday.

The new device uses 3G connectivity, whereas its predecessor used the slower Edge standard, and it now also comes with a bevy of enterprise-friendly features. It also has GPS connectivity for the first time.

The iPhone 3G store 2.0 software, which can also be bought for use on the first iPhone deals, supports push e-mail and synchronization with Microsoft Exchange. The iPhone Download can be wirelessly synchronized with a Windows PC, and has security features such as support for Cisco IPsec VPN and WPA2 Enterprise with 802.1x authentication for Wi-Fi network protection.

Third-party applications can now also be run, and Apple set its new App Store live on Thursday through its iTunes software. The App Store is itself an application that can run on the iPhone and iPod Touch, and is a portal for many free and paid-for applications, developed using Apple's software development kit, which can be downloaded to and immediately used on the devices.

O2, which has exclusivity for the iPhone in the United Kingdom, has launched business tariffs for the device for the first time, now it has more enterprise-friendly features. These tariffs, which all include an 8.51 (US$16.82)--excluding VAT--'iPhone bolt-on' for unlimited 3G data and usage of The Cloud's Wi-Fi network, start at 30.91 (US$61.08) per month on a 24-month contract. Buying a new iPhone Download on that cheapest contract would, however, cost 84.26 (US$166.51) for the 8GB model or 135.32 (US$267.41) for the 16GB model.

Business customers who had the original iPhone on a consumer tariff, but are now upgrading to an iPhone Download on a business tariff, will get that upgrade for free. They will also be able to pass on their old iPhone to anyone who has an O2 SIM card--even a pay-as-you-go SIM--and that person will be able to then use the older device as long as they pay 10 (US$19.76) per month (including VAT) for the iPhone bolt-on.

Consumers can pass on their old iPhone in a similar way, but they will have to pay 100 (US$197.61) for the upgrade to the new model.

New devices can be bought at Apple stores, Carphone Warehouse outlets or through O2 itself. Upgrades from the old model to the new, however, cannot take place in Apple stores.

Apple's iPhone 3G Launch Filled With Great Fanfare, Dismay

Apple's new dream gadget sees a less than stellar debut

The iPhone Information launch seemed fated for success. After months of anticipation, the day was upon loyal Apple fans. As they camped in their Apple tents outside stores, visions of Steve Jobs delivering them rectangular shaped presents danced through their heads. When they awoke crowds had formed, and their dreams were about to become reality. Everything seemed perfect -- with naught a riot or robber in sight.

As the orderly lines began to shuffle into the Apple stores and get their new phones; thats was when the problems began. For all its savvy design work, and for all the months of engineering, Apple and its partner AT&T were wholly taken aback by a plethora of glitches that crippled the new phones.

Frederick Smalls, an insurance broker in Whitman, Massachusetts was among the loyal fans, turned angry critics. After trying to get his new iPhone Information to work for two hours with no success, he remarked, "It's such grief and aggravation."

As customers bought the new phone, which comes equipped with a higher-speed data connection and a GPS chip, they discovered alarmingly that they could not activate their phones. The culprit according to an AT&T spokesman was a glitch in Apple's iTunes servers that made it so the phones could not be fully activated in store.

Managers told customers patiently to take the phones home and complete the activation process. However, customers found to their dismay that at home Apple's servers were equally unresponsive.

The problem, which some are dubbing "the great iMess", even left owners of the older model of iPhones without service. The old iPhones received a firmware update, which required reactivation. They were similarly unable to reach the servers.

With the phones crippled for hours, only emergency calls could be made. Freelance photographer Giovanni Cipriano, who updated his first-gen purchase iPhone 3G, was not happy. He stated, "It's a mess."

The original cheap new iPhone launched with at-home activation only. With the new discount new iPhone, subsidization by carriers caused AT&T to want to activate in store.

The problems closely followed glitches with Apple's MobileMe service, which launched Thursday. The MobileMe service, which synchronizes a user's personal data across devices -- including the discount iPhone 3G -- would not allow many users to log on.

From there it was all downhill for Apple. Alex Cavallo was among those waiting in New York. He remains an Apple fan, but admits that it was an unpleasant experience as he had to use another phone. After being used to the iPhone, he describes his use of the standard phone as "uncomfortable".

With its attractive line of products, including the iPhone, iPod, and MacBook Air, it certainly has an attractive brand image. As Nick Epperson, a 24-year-old graduate student, who camped out for the iPhone Information stated, "Chicks dig the iPhone".

AT&T's IPhone Stock Is Mostly Sold; Apple Has Supply

By Connie Guglielmo

July 13 (Bloomberg) -- AT&T Inc. stores have mostly emptied out of inventory of Apple Inc.'s new iPhone deals in the U.S. two days after thousands lined up to buy the handset.

Apple, seeking to widen its business beyond iPod media players and Macintosh computers, said it still had iPhone models in most of its own shops to sell today. The Cupertino, California-based company, which has 187 stores in 38 states, is selling it for as little as $199.

The 3G iPhone, which works with speedier third-generation phone networks, went on sale July 11 in the U.S. and 21 other countries. Apple's partners in the U.K., Germany, Canada and Japan said many shops ran out on the first day. AT&T, Apple's exclusive U.S. partner, said most of its 2,000 stores were out of supplies and that it expected new inventory within days.

``The Apple retail store likely has your 3G iPhone in stock,'' Apple told visitors on its Web site. ``Shipments of 3G iPhone arrive most days.''

Apple was out of all three models in 55 stores, according to a tally posted on its Web site last night. That includes outlets in Fresno, California; Victor, New York; Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Madison, Wisconsin; and Knoxville, Tennessee. Apple's lone stores in Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, New Mexico and Rhode Island were out of supplies, leaving buyers there with no iPhones to buy today.

Shoppers seem to prefer the black, 16-gigabyte model, which sells for $299, based on Apple's tally. The company is also selling a 16-gigabyte model in white. The 8-gigabyte handset, priced at $199, is only available in black, according to Apple's site. Customers must sign up for a two-year contract with AT&T at the time of purchase.

New York Supply

The New York store on Fifth Avenue, the only shop that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, said it will have the Web-surfing handset available. So will Apple's other New York City stores in SoHo and on West 14th Street.

Customers shopping at the Fifth Avenue store between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. were unable to buy the phone. AT&T says it routinely does maintenance on its computers during that time, preventing users from signing up for service. The company is ``working on a solution to enable sales to still occur during this window,'' said AT&T spokesman Michael Coe. ``We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused for our customers.''

Apple said it will update its retail availability list each evening at 9 p.m. San Francisco time.

Waiting in Line

AT&T and online Apple fan sites said on the first day that some customers left stores without a working phone because of problems linking the device to Apple's iTunes service, the last step in the activation process. AT&T told buyers to link to iTunes from home. Apple spokesman Steve Dowling declined to comment.

At the SoHo store, manager Khalil Smith said there weren't any problems with activation yesterday morning. ``Things have been going really smoothly, and people are really happy,'' he said.

Lines snaked around the block in New York, with about 50 customers taking their places by 7:30 a.m. yesterday, said Matthew Gurgel.

``Every half-hour we move a little bit,'' said Magda Buccek, 21, of Brooklyn, who said she had thought the line would move more quickly.

Regine Klosebriganti of New York, 24, went to the Fifth Avenue Apple store at 1 a.m. and was told the line was closed. ``It was a mob scene,'' she said. ``They said I could come back at 3 a.m. This is nothing compared to what they had there.''

``If you're selling a product of convenience, why do you put your customers through inconvenience?'' said Chad Stoller, 37, who left the line at the SoHo store, saying it wasn't worth the wait. He said he had expected the line to be much shorter, anticipating that activation issues from the first day would deter people from buying the 3G iPhone.

Apple fell $4.05 to $172.58 July 11 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. Dallas-based AT&T dropped 19 cents to $32.58.

A iPhone apps Article to For You to Enjoy

Apple Bungles its iPhone 3G Launch

Anticipation quickly turned to frustration on Friday for the millions of Apple customers trying to upgrade their old iPhones to the new software, or activate their newly purchased Apple's new iPhone 3G. With Apple's servers overloaded and unable to accommodate customer demand, eager buyers who had camped out all week to acquire the new phone were thwarted. Though the new-generation phones were designed to be activated in-store, salespeople instructed customers Friday to go home, connect the phone to a personal computer and download new software to activate it.

Apple did not return phone calls or emails asking for an explanation of its launch-day problems, but by 10 p.m. EST on Friday, this reporter at long last reached a technical support representative, who identified himself only as George: "It's been crazy the whole day," he said. "Our server has been really busy and has been timing out."

The logjam was a major misstep for a company that markets its products as simpler, more elegant and easier to use than the competition's. "The store is basically broken at this point," said Michael Rose, a blogger for tuaw.com, which reports on Apple. When he tried to upgrade his older iPhone 3G store Touch early Friday to take advantage of the new software, he says he received an error message informing him the iTunes store was unavailable (the iPhone deals must be authenticated through Apple's iTunes program to complete a software upgrade). Adds Rose, "I think the lesson is that nobody executes perfectly, not even Apple."

Cassel Kroll, 37, waited in line for three hours Friday morning at the AT&T store on Manhattan's Upper East Side to purchase his new high-tech toy. It would be another five hours before he could get it fully working. "I haven't figured out how to use this thing properly," Kroll told TIME at the end of the business day on Friday. Although he was able to make phone calls, when he tried to load applications onto the new phone, he received a perplexing error message stating that applications in his iTunes library could not be installed on the new iPhone for lack of authorization. Other customers were derailed when attempting to purchase or download add-on applications at all.

For many users, efforts to reach technical support added yet another layer of frustration. Representatives for AT&T, the sole wireless carrier for the new device, referred most technical questions to Apple. An AT&T technician informed TIME only of the obvious predicament that Apple was "experiencing some challenges due to the launch of the new iPhone" and was unable to resolve problems accessing the Apple App store, downloading applications, or setting up AOL and Yahoo email accounts on the device. Apple's own support lines were so jammed that we were unable to get through until late Friday evening. Meanwhile, instructions on the Apple website for basic functions, such as configuring your email, were confusing and of little help.

Consumers were not the only disappointed constituents on Friday. On a day that should have been a celebration for the company, Apple's stock fell more than 2%. Toward the end of the day, however, many of the early technical problems seemed to have been resolved. By 6 p.m., after retrying several times, Kroll said he was able to download and use the free apps he had selected. Later that night after an hourlong wait for phone support an Apple technician was able to walk me through the necessary steps to get my email working properly on the phone. And by midnight I had wirelessly downloaded my first app directly onto the device, without any snafus. I was relieved momentarily, but still disappointed that Apple and AT&T had left so many users adrift on launch day.

By Shaun Nichols in San Francisco VNU Net - Friday, July 11 10:00 amApple has officially launched the iPhone App Store to promote third-party applications which run natively on the discount iPhone and iPod Touch, a move it had originally opposed.

The company has already made 500 applications available to users by way of iTunes and the discount new iPhone 2.0 software upgrade.

The update foreshadows the hotly anticipated iPhone, which is set to go on sale on 12 July.

Companies already offering purchase discount iPhone 3G applications include Facebook, Flickr, Cisco and eBay.

Google is offering a search application that scours the user's iphone 3G and the web and can offer map information based on the user's location.

Games vendor Electronic Arts is already offering Sudoku, Tetris and Scrabble games for the handset.

The initial round of iPhone app store offerings are the first to be developed with Apple's iPhone SDK.

Tim Westergren, founder and chief strategy officer at Pandora, told vnunet.com that the development experience for the iPhone was more like a desktop app than a mobile phone application.

Pandora developed a standalone music player for the device which taps into a user's online Pandora account and syncs stations and song preferences from the service.

Westergren explained that the iPhone player was so successful that elements of it will be used for the next web-based Pandora player.

"The nice thing about it is that it has all these tools," Westergren said of the SDK. "It allows us to do a great application."

AT&T Says iPhone 3G Sold Out, As Lines Grow At Apple Stores

Friday, July 11th, 2008 at 5:15 PM - by Vern Seward

While the lines at Orlando, Florida's, two Apple Stores were still between 50 and 100 people as of 3:00PM Friday, lines outside of every AT&T store iPodObserver.com checked had disappeared. AT&T is claiming that they've sold out of Free iPhone and representatives will be glad to take your order for an iPhone, with a 7 to 10 day wait and a return visit to the store to activate it.

Meanwhile, Apple Stores seem to be flushed with iPhones. Getting them out the door, however, is apparently a lot harder than it should be. When the Apple Stores opened, customers went through the process of buying and activating a Free iPhone in about 15 minutes. However, as the volume of activations increased the time it took to activate a new iPhone increased as well.

At 3:00PM Apple employees still cheered when a new purchase discount iPhone 3G customer walked out the door, but those cheers seem to come more infrequently as store reps struggle to make customers happy.

Outside, in the line in front of the Apple Store in The Mall at Millenia, intrepid purchase discount iPhone 3G customers look resigned for a long wait. Some sat in small groups on the floor while others, who have apparently been in lines like this before, sat in folding chairs and looked as if they were camping out.

What's worse is that the lines continue to grow as people leave work.

Apple Store reps and mall personnel appear to be making every attempt to keep those standing in lines happy content patient. Apple reps passed out water and chatted with customers and mall management made plans to accommodate customers on Saturday, which seemed prudent since many people will wait until the weekend to attempt a purchase. And since AT&T seems to be out of Free iPhone, Apple Stores are now the only option if you don't want to wait a week.

No matter how you dice it, it looks like a long weekend ahead for Apple.
